The most direct way to Koh Phangan is to fly to Koh Samui, which has frequent flights from Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Pattaya. Check Bangkok Air for flights. From there you can take a minibus to Maenam Beach pier and take a boat from there to Thong Sala on Koh Phangan.
The journey from Koh Samui Airport is just a minimum of 1 hour, and you can also buy a convenient minibus and boat joint ticket from around 300 Baht.

It is cheaper to fly from Bangkok to the government airport at Surat Thani, where a couple of budget airlines are now operating from. Check out Air Asia and Nok Air.
It takes about 5 hours to get to Koh Phangan from Surat Thani Airport and costs around 500 Baht. This includes bus transfer and boat ticket.
From Koh Samui, there are multiple ferries a day. Boats leave from Bangrak pier (Seatran Discovery), Nathon (Raja) and Mae Nam pier to Thong Sala (Lomprayah). The Haad Rin Queen Ferry goes directly to Haad Rin from Big Buddha pier.
Lomprayah, and Raja both offer ferries throughout the day to Thong Sala pier.
Songserm, Lomprayah or Seatran boats departs frequently from Mae Haad pier and arrive at Thong Sala pier.

Overnight buses leave Khaosan Road in the evening about 6pm and in the next morning arrive at Surat Thani, then take a boat. Bus and boat combo tickets can be arranged by travel agencies on Khaosan Road for about 700-900 Baht all the way to Koh Phangan.
An overnight train from Bangkok has a bed, and is a comfortable way to get Koh Phangan. Trains stop early morning at Surat Thani. Then, buy a bus and boat ticket to Koh Phangan. Train tickets from Surat Thani back to Bangkok should be reserved in advance especially in high season.

Once you make it to Koh Phangan, there will be taxis waiting for you at the pier. Tell a driver that you want to go to “Ananda” on Hin Kong Beach, and they’ll know where to take you. Fare will range from 150 Baht in low season to possibly 300 Baht in high season.
Most countries receive a one month visa exemption on arrival once you enter the kingdom by air. If you plan to stay longer, you can obtain a “Tourist Visa” at the Thai embassy in your home country.
It is wise to check into your visa situation through your home country’s embassy or consulate before departing, as each country may have different rules and regulations.
